Instead, it is always a long and perpetual struggle to make sure that they do.

Even in the West, it is the separation of power and formation of groups and institutions to make sure the law and the constitution function. People need to stand up for their rights.

Of course, in the Caucasus the situation is much worse and I think there is a long road ahead. It requires people to understand their rights, to stand up for them, and yes, to criticize the government.

What's interesting is how "national security" is used a premice to strip away rights -- something that emerged in the trial of Adnan and Emin. However, it has to be the most simplistic and infantile attempt I've heard.

But looking at the video of Adnan and Emin leaving the court room, seeing them smile as they were greeted by chants of supports, I can't help but think they've started the ball rolling.

It's when people like this exist that there's hope.

Meanwhile, we should all never get complacent in any country and always push for freedom of the individual, the right to freedom of speech, democracy and respect for human rights.

I think that's what we all do whether in our native England, Azerbaijan or Holland. Anyway, glad to hear that Ozan should now be producing a song in support of Adnan and Emin. I think this is crucial too.

Change starts with youth, and I believe it's happening in Armenia. Still not so sure about the same in Armenia given the politicized nature of having to "bad" options. Then again, the same is true in the West, I suppose.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zET_IR0qctYOnnik Krikorianhttp://www.oneworld.amnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5126498084582547215.post-86449982073897829752009-09-06T15:40:17.392+05:002009-09-06T15:40:17.392+05:00I know, Bart, agree with you 100%. It does not require any scarce resources (well, okay, a sane mind); it is simply a choice you make as a government not to interfere in the use of this right of citizens.

It is the same with regards to the right of a fair trial, right of association, right to run for elections, etc. etc. (all negative rights - Berlin).

It does not require anything else than political will.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5126498084582547215.post-62036361650681237622009-09-06T08:01:53.309+05:002009-09-06T08:01:53.309+05:00Thank you Nigar for sharing the trial process and ...Thank you Nigar for sharing the trial process and your point about the 'comforted Azerbaijanis' is so right.Aygunnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5126498084582547215.post-82467465141965340642009-09-05T21:59:46.120+05:002009-09-05T21:59:46.120+05:00Excellent post, Nigar.

When will people realize that "almost 20" is not that young anymore. At the very least it's long enough for a state to develop and get on the right path (I realize that put this way it sounds a bit naive and simplistic). Will they still use that same line fifty years from now?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5126498084582547215.post-32631669645841886862009-09-05T21:17:34.718+05:002009-09-05T21:17:34.718+05:00great and sadgreat and sadAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5126498084582547215.post-65395370638759737532009-09-05T20:42:22.271+05:002009-09-05T20:42:22.271+05:00Superb...Superb...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
